The Big Mission Project

Volunteer Reading Tutors Training

Become a volunteer reading tutor in an elementary school in Mid-City San Diego! This is a training opportunity you won’t want to miss!

On Saturday, September 26, Cindy Dunlevy, founder and director of the “Everyone A Reader” volunteer program, will be here to train reading volunteers to work one-on-one with students who are not reading at grade level.

This program was designed by the San Diego County Office of Education and is a highly successful and positive way of supporting children in the process of learning to read.

This three-hour training will take place in Linder Lounge at First United Methodist Church of San Diego from 9:00am-Noon. A continental breakfast will be provided.

Please RSVP to Brenda Blake at 619-297-4366 ext 125 or email bblake@fumcsd.org if you plan on attending the training or have any questions.

Neighborhood Family Meal
Serving a community in need as an expression of our faith
Rev. Molly Vetter

I have always been grateful that our communion table is open to everyone. I love inviting folks to Christ’s table, reminding us all that everyone is included.

Which is why I am also excited about the free neighborhood family meals we are hosting at the Normal Heights UMC.

As we set tables for the community, we will be providing the same hospitality that we have experienced in worship. Only, this time, the food we share will be a whole meal, served to a community where too many people – and children, especially – go to bed hungry. We will be meeting a real, physical hunger with real, nourishing food.

This is not a social service – this act of hospitality and sharing is an expression of the core of our faith. As we gather for a community meal, may we know that we are extending Christ’s presence into a world in need.

The Neighborhood Family Meals are generally served on the last Monday of each month. Contact Brenda Blake bblake@fumcsd.org or 619-297-4366 ext.125 for more information. Monthly serving dates are published in the eNews under "Notices."

Get Your Hands Dirty
Volunteer Work at the New Roots Community Farm

In May, nearly 40 folks from our church joined residents of Mid-City in a work day, helping prepare the ground for the New Roots Community Farm.

Work Day and New Roots Community Farm

The New Roots Community Farm is a project of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), which will allow refugees and other low-income residents of Mid-City San Diego to grow their own food, locally.

Work Day at New Roots Community Farm

While this workday is over, there are still opportunities to get involved; volunteers with the IRC will be there each Saturday morning, and welcome any help. For more information about working any Saturday, contact Amy Lint in the IRC office at 619-641-7510 x244 or amy.lint@theirc.org.
