The following is a list of some of the many service ministries of First Church; they may be a starting point for you!
Global Missions Task Force
coordinates mission awareness and support, especially with our Covenant Missionaries, abroad and in the U.S. Contact: Evan Neel (evanneel@cox.net)
Mentoring
partners church mentors with low-income single-parent families; works also with Lost Boys of Sudan, Foster Care issues, Mentoring Mothers Program, and the SPIN Scholarship Team. Contact: Brenda Blake (bblake@fumcsd.org)
Our Big Mission Project
extends our work into Mid-City San Diego, as we seek to be actively involved in ministry with people living in poverty. We have begun this work, and are dreaming and working to see it grow.
SPIN Scholarship Team
offers one-on-one tutoring to families who we know through SPIN--the Supportive Parents Information Network. The Scholarship Team meets two Saturday mornings each month. Contact: John Stevenson (johnmstevenson@cox.net)
Food Ministry
collects and distributes of food, weekly, to low-income families. Volunteers work on monthly teams on Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons, as well as doing mid-week collection routes. Contact: Brenda Blake (bblake@fumcsd.org)
Interfaith Shelter Network
hosts around 12 homeless people at the church for 2 weeks annually, in the spring. Contact: Brenda Blake (bblake@fumcsd.org)
Mission Outreach Thrift Store
sells donated items to raise money for local missions; volunteers provide staff support. Contact Manager: Dottie Kennedy (619-528-0026)
AIDS Ministry
supports people with AIDS, providing care and nutritional food to people with need. Contact: Brenda Blake (bblake@fumcsd.org)
Earth Care
plans environmental work projects and education, from litter clean-ups to guided nature walks.
Lost Boys of Sudan
offers support (rides, school support, etc) and provides education in our congregation about the Lost Boys, in coordination with Mentoring Task Force. Contact: Brenda Blake (bblake@fumcsd.org)
New Life Counseling Center
offers mental health counseling by licensed therapists; scholarships and sliding-scale fees available. Contact Director: Greg LaDue (gladue@fumcsd.org)
The Labyrinth
provides this spiritual tool to local groups and the public, through monthly walks. Contact: Gary Krueger (gfk_bonita@earthlink.net)
Prison Ministry
purchases Christmas gifts for children of prisoners through Angel Tree; supports “Welcome Home” home for women; pastors-to-prisoners program; Kairos Prison Ministry program of spiritual development. Contacts: Mary Beth Klauer (msklauer@aol.com)
United Methodist Women
supports New Entra Casa, a home for women coming out of prison, Neighborhood House in Calexico, and numerous other mission projects, through their circle meetings and annual events like the Holiday Country Store. Contact President: Gerry Travis (619-275-6449).
Mission Sewing Project
sews new clothes for children, to be distributed through the Good Neighbor Center. Contact: Nancy Wherry through the church office.
Prayers and Squares
Quilting Ministry is an international interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. The purpose of Prayers & Squares is to promote prayer through the use of quilts.
Health Ministry
promotes health, wellness, healing, and education throughout the congregation as well as an outreach to the San Diego community and beyond.
Our Parish Nurse
works with the Health Ministry Task Force and clergy to assist and enable the congregation and beyond to attain, maintain or regain optimal health and wholeness.
Volunteer Opportunities
give a variety of ways you can help in the hands-on work of our church--both here on our campus and out in the community.
Homebound Ministry
visits members of our congregation who are, for the most part, confined to their homes because of health and mobility concerns. Contact: Rev. Jim Mowry, 619-297-4366.
Metro United Methodist Urban Ministry
began when First Church moved to Mission Valley. Now, it is a thriving United Methodist urban ministry in San Diego; programs work in emergency family development (including Good Neighbor Centers), youth development, workforce development, and community leadership. Rev. John Hughes, jhughes@metrosandiego.org.
In addition, church members are leaders in many community service groups—ask around, and you may find people who know about an area you’re interested in!
