Exploration Classes
Alpha—Exploring Faith is a fun and exciting introduction to the Christian faith. This class is ideal for people with questions or seeking renewal. The course begins with a Celebration Dinner and continues for ten Wednesday evenings with one optional Saturday retreat. Each evening begins with supper at 6 pm, includes a 45-minute video and ends with small group discussions. Led by Rev. Mary Allman-Boyle.

Serving from the Heart is an eight-week study building confidence and commitment as you discover your own unique gifts and talents for service in the church and community. Explore your gifts, find the passion to serve and connect with service opportunities by assessing your spiritual gifts, talents and abilities, resources, individuality, dreams and experience.

Unbinding Your Heart: 40 Days of Prayer & Faith Sharing is a six-week, church wide study in conjunction with the preaching on Sunday mornings. During the six weeks, participants will engage in 40 days of individual prayer exercises as well as weekly group gatherings for discussing transformative faith stories and a time for building community.

Biblical Studies
Interviewing the Bible allows you to let your own questions guide you into a deeper understanding of Scripture. During this Lenten Scripture study, the class will use a variety of Bible study tools and approaches to search for explanations within the context of the biblical stories and apply the findings to our own lives and times.

Invitation to John is an eleven-week study looking at the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus through the Gospel of John. This fourth gospel stands apart from the other three synoptic gospels by hearing Jesus speaking not in parables by in discourse with Nicodemus, a Samaritan woman, Mary Magdalene and the disciples. We marvel at Jesus turning water into wine, calling Lazarus from the tomb, and washing his disciples’ feet. This class invites all to come and see Jesus, to hear him speak, to see his signs, and to consider anew what it means to be his followers.

A Life Worth Living is a nine- week course exploring newness of a life in Christ. It is based on Paul’s letter to the Philippians. This Wednesday night course begins with dinner, a short video and a small group discussion of newness of heart, purpose, attitude, friendships, etc. The evening starts at 6 p.m. and promptly ends at 8:45 p.m. from January 9, 2008 through March 12.

Post-Resurrection Appearances of Jesus is a look at the many accounts of Jesus Christ after his resurrection. The class will study the witness and understanding of Christ through the lens of John’s Gospel.

History & Religion
Methodism 101 is a 6-week look at the history of the Methodist movement, the church organization, its theology and practice. The class examines the meaning and opportunities in church membership. Taught by Rev Bob Feldman and Rev Bill Word, both retired Methodist clergy with numerous years of experience, the class is offered twice a year. This class is recommended for those new to Methodism and those who have been Methodist for sometime as a refresher.

Denominations of Christianity What are the differences between Presbyterians and Methodists? What practices separate the Baptists from the Catholics? Understand the history of the church and how the different denominations came into being. The class looks at eight different denominations of the Christian faith. Learn what are the emphases of each tradition and how the theology of each denomination leads to those practices. Led by Rev Elbert Kim.

Ethics & Social Action
What is Christian Marriage? is a study of the theology of marriage. As Californians prepare to decide how we will define marriage as a civil institution, the understanding of marriage will be explored using Scripture, tradition, reason and experience as guides to considering theological approaches to covenant relationships, legal implications of marriage in civil society, and personal experience with the committed relationships that help shape our communities.

Environmental Issues and Creation Care is a five-week “hands-on” class where participants will be invited to put into action what is learned through the class discussions. The sessions incorporate looking at biblical principles around creation care with practical applications and “hands-on” experience in working to improve our environment.

Poverty and the Work of the Church is a six-week “hands-on” class combining the study of Scripture regarding the ministry to the poor with actual outreach opportunities through involvement with our Food Ministry. The six-week study will be divided into two weeks of theologizing, practicum, and re-evaluation of the ministry of the Church in a world that is in need.

Marriage & Family
Parenting 101 helps parents outline a plan to parenting based on a Christian family’s priorities and values. Sessions finding your “North Star,” writing a family mission statement together, balancing time and commitment, and keeping the family strong. Led by Rev Greg LaDue.

In-Depth Long Term Studies
Christian Believer is a 30-week study with daily preparation and weekly two-hour group sessions, integrating Bible study and study of the basic beliefs of the Christian faith. Disciple IV: Under the Tree of Life is an upper level Disciple Bible Study class. This 32-week course takes a deeper look into the collection of books in the Old Testament called the Writings as well as study Gospel of John, the Letters of John, and Revelation from the New Testament. Emphasis on praying the Psalms and on living toward the promise pictured in Revelation highlight this study.
