The Memorial Garden

The First United Methodist Church of San Diego follows in the great tradition of Christians to minister to each other from birth to death. So it is fitting that a portion of the church grounds be dedicated as a memorial site with a columbarium, a memorial wall and a place for prayer and meditation.

The columbarium consists of ten wall sections forming the outer perimeter of the Memorial Garden. Each section contains 108 niches with each niche having the capacity to receive two urns. Urn size is prescribed to be 7" x 5 ¾" x 5 ¾" and be made of bronze, copper, or stainless steel.

The granite face of each niche will be engraved upon inurnment with the individual’s name and dates of birth and death. Sufficient space on the granite facing exists to accommodate names and dates for two individuals. Selection of space in the columbarium wall is made at the time the Memorial Garden office receives your reservation application. At this time the purchasing party will receive a certificate acknowledging niche purchase.

The inner serpentine wall of the garden is designated the Memorial Wall upon which polished granite name plaques are placed for honoring or remembering loved ones. Memorial plaques are available in two sizes — 6" x 12" (one name with dates of birth and death) and 12" x 12" (two names with dates of birth and death).

The Memorial Garden is located immediately beyond the “Mount of Olives” — the landscaped hill behind the altar window. The landscaping of the Memorial Garden creates a pleasant, restful and quiet area to meditate and reflect.
