Global Missions

Mission Projects
First United Methodist Church of San Diego has a long history of commitment to missions—locally, nationally, and globally. The desire to participate in the connectional system of the United Methodist Church is realized in many ways through service, financial gifts, and prayer.

The Global Missions Task Force
works to educate about our missions, and to support the work of missionaries connected to our church, locally and abroad. In particular, the Global Missions Task Force supports our four Covenant Missionaries, in their work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Philippines, Guatemala and Russia. The missions task force invites interested members of the church to join and assist in a strong need for mission education for the congregation.

The Church and Society Task Force
supports our work of "doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with our God" (Micah 6:8). Through education, advocacy, and outreach ministry, Church and Society seeks social justice. Led by Scott Daniel, the task force ministers through issues ranging from campus ministry to environmental justice to poverty and inequality. Contact: Scott Daniel (sdaniel@cox.net)

Food Ministry
program provides groceries to needy families in San Diego every Sunday. By gleaning unused food from grocery stores and restaurants and gathering donations from our church, we are able to offer food to some who are hungry. The program is always seeking new volunteers—to pick up food, to help re-package food on Saturdays, to distribute food on Sunday afternoons, or simply to bring food (both perishable and non-perishable) to church on Sundays. Interfaith Shelter Network Rotational Homeless Shelter
is housed at our church for two weeks each year. This year, we hosted the shelter from January 9 to 23. During the shelter, we provide a clean, warm, safe place to stay, as well as meals for the 12 to 14 guests. Volunteers make this ministry possible; please consider helping with our next Shelter. The Mentoring Program
connects trained volunteers from our church with families as they make a transition from welfare to work. Under the leadership of chair Nyla Marson, the Mentoring Program Steering Committee supports the Mentoring Program in its ministry of helping build up their lives and get free of the cycle of poverty. The Mission Outreach Thrift Store
Our Thrift Store, located at 3186 Adams Avenue in San Diego, generates additional funds to support local mission projects. Phone 528-0026. Thrift store income supports the work of the programs listed here, as well as our United Methodist Women's missions and outreach ministries of our congregation, making worship more accessible to the community. Through our apportionment money, we support the mission projects of the United Methodist Church, which include local as well as global projects.

Nationally
there are many projects that need volunteers in mission for short or long term assignments. These programs also continue to need funding. Watch this site for more information as it is developed.
