Our Parish Nurse, Dorothy Howard
After a considerable hiatus, First Church
is proud to play host to a parish nurse once again. Dorothy Howard, a
recently retired registered nurse, has been a member since 1974 and is
looking forward to serving the church in this unique capacity. She
officially assumes her post in a few weeks time and will have regularly
scheduled hours come the first of the new year.
After receiving her
degree in nursing from UCLA in the ‘60s, she began what would become a
38-year career with Kaiser Permanente. During that time, she worked in
the Intensive Care Unit, pediatrics, telemetry and obstetrics. In 1988,
she was transferred to Carlsbad Ambulatory Care Clinic where she stayed
until her retirement. She said she enjoyed the private practice feel.
She would like to
provide services or information to parishioners that will promote a
healthy lifestyle and supply resources for church members with problems
and concerns they may have, as long as it is within her sphere of
knowledge.
“I can refer, I can
suggest, I can listen, but I really can’t advise or diagnose,” Howard
said.
In her personal life
she enjoys dancing, swimming, walking and spending time with her three,
soon to be four, grandkids. She said she welcomes suggestions on how to
best serve the congregation.
“It’s a new experience and I wanted to
contribute to the church,” Howard said. “I’t has been very good to me.”
