The Sankofa Pilgrimage
Examine the correlation between history and theology, and how our history informs our current realities.

Sankofa: “It is not foolish to go back and get that which you have forgotten.”
Sankofa is a West African Adinkra symbol that speaks to what we hope to accomplish through our pilgrimage at FUMCSD: To remember the humanity of all people. This program is developed to help us examine the correlation between history and theology, how our history informs our current realities, and unpack our own implicit biases.
We begin each pilgrimage with an intensive 6-week pre-study course and then journey as a group in a multi-day trip. Our Sankofa Pilgrimage program started in 2023 with a trip through the southern U.S. to move us through history from before the Transatlantic Slave Trade through Chattel Slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the new era of Jim Crow. In 2024, we embarked on another pilgrimage, this time focusing on the northeastern U.S.
We're thrilled to announce that we'll be taking another journey of discovery in 2025! Save the date for June 2 - 9, 2025, for our Midwest Migration: A Movement Towards Justice. We'll be traveling to St. Louis, Missouri; Springfield, Illinois; and Chicago, Illinois. And there's so much history that we'll unpack together.
Trip details and registration are still being finalized but you're invited to register for our October 13 interest meeting to learn more.
Your donation helps support those who are interested in attending an upcoming pilgrimage but may not be able to afford the cost.
