Registration for the 2025 Sankofa Pilgrimage is now open!
Join Rev. Brittany Juliette Hanlin and Rev. Trudy D. Robinson for an unforgettable learning experience, traveling through Missouri and Illinois to see how racism has touched individuals throughout the Midwest – in the past and today.
This year’s trip takes place June 2-9, 2025, and includes sites in St. Lous, Missouri; Springfield, Illinois; and Chicago, Illinois. The itinerary is packed with tours and discussions at a wide array of notable landmarks and museums, including the Gateway Arch National Park, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, and Emmett Till’s Grave.
Prior to leaving for the journey, participants come together in a 6-week course to gain background information that brings color and meaning to the trip.
Registration deadline is March 31. Get all the details, including the cost, what’s included, and registration information.
If you’d like to learn more and ask questions, we encourage you to register for our interest meeting, which is coming up on Sunday, January 26!
About the Sankofa Pilgrimage
The Sankofa Pilgrimage was developed by First UMC of San Diego in 2023 to help our community uncover how our history informs our current realities, while unpacking our implicit biases. Sankofa means “It is not foolish to go back and get that which you have forgotten.” And that sets the tone for this experience.
This trip is about learning and cultivating relationships with each other by opening our hearts to important conversations of faith. This pilgrimage is a journey that begins long before we depart. Our present-day reality was born from the actions of the past and as we uncover and confront that which we did not know, we can begin to build a better world for generations to come.
We hope you will seriously consider the importance of a trip like this for yourself, our church, and the world we are creating. Our 2023 and 2024 pilgrimages were transformative because the Spirit of God greeted us every step of our journey together and we expect the same this year! We pray God will transform our hearts and reveal ways to better become God's beloved community.
