Bishop Grant Hagiya, a member of the Commission on a Way Forward, presented the report by the Commission to South District congregations and explained possible impacts on the United Methodist Church.
His presentation includes changes which could restructure the framework of the denomination. The resolution of this issue could critically divide the church.
Currently, the church considers homosexuality "incompatible with Christian teaching" and does not allow "self-avowed practicing homosexuals" to become clergy, according to the Book of Discipline. It also bans church weddings to same-sex couples. Over the past year-and-a-half, the Commission examined every paragraph of the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and explored options to maintain and strengthen the unity of the church.
The Commission's recommendations will be presented at a special UMC General Conference in February 2019 for a vote by the delegations in attendance.
